Barcelona sporting director Deco has officially stated that the club will delay activating Marcus Rashford’s buy option until next summer, despite the forward’s standout performances since arriving at Camp Nou on loan.
Deco explained that Barcelona will instead shift their attention toward addressing other key areas of the squad when the January transfer window opens, stressing that the club must work within its current financial limitations before committing to a major signing.
Rashford’s impressive start at Camp Nou
Rashford joined Barcelona after falling out of favour at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim, but his move to Spain has sparked a major resurgence in his form.
Under the guidance of coach Hansi Flick, the 28-year-old has rediscovered his sharpness, pace, and creativity, quickly becoming one of the team’s most influential players this season.
His contributions include a crucial assist in El Clasico, a standout brace in the Champions League against Olympiacos, and consistent match-winning performances on the left wing.

Rashford’s revival at Barcelona has also earned him a fresh call-up to the England national team, with strong prospects of making Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad next year.
Deco explains Barcelona’s financial position
Despite Rashford’s exceptional form, Deco emphasised that Barcelona must remain financially disciplined. He noted that executing a permanent transfer in January is unrealistic under the club’s current constraints.
“If we are doing well and there are no surprises, I don’t think it’s necessary,” Deco told reporters at Camp Nou. “We know the areas we must strengthen and the challenges we are facing financially.”
The director hinted that Barcelona will focus on more affordable reinforcements during the winter window, saving major transfer decisions—such as Rashford’s—for the summer when the club expects more financial flexibility.
Rashford and Flick reflect on progress
After Barcelona’s recent 3-1 victory over Elche, Rashford expressed satisfaction with his adaptation to La Liga, though he stressed his desire to keep improving and contributing to the squad.
Coach Hansi Flick also spoke highly of the English forward, praising his influence both on and off the pitch. Flick described Rashford as “a very important player” whose consistency has been crucial during a period of injuries and squad rotation.
Rashford will suit up again on Sunday as Barcelona take on Celta Vigo in La Liga, after which he will join the England squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania.
