False alarm triggers panic among students and local residents

The Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, addressed the incident, explaining that, “On 21/11/2025 at approximately 1000hrs, an unverified report circulated claiming that two pupils of St. Peter’s Academy had been abducted while participating in sporting activities. Our officers, working closely with military personnel, immediately responded to the area and discovered that the pupils had only fled in fear after seeing hunters carrying Dane guns, mistakenly assuming they were kidnappers.”

The security operatives carried out a comprehensive sweep of the area, ensuring that all students and residents were safe. Normalcy was quickly restored, and panic subsided following the confirmation that no abductions had taken place.

Investigations included detailed interviews with the proprietor of St. Peter’s Academy, who verified that the alarming report was entirely false. The school management further assured the authorities that all students were accounted for and safe.

The Command further reassured the community that the area remains under close monitoring to prevent any potential security breaches and that routine patrols continue to safeguard the school and surrounding neighborhood.

Police and military promptly respond to the scene

CP Mohammed highlighted the importance of responsible reporting and the dangers of spreading unverified information. “We strongly urge members of the public to disregard this circulating report as mere rumour. Journalists and media outlets should always verify facts before publication to prevent misinformation and unnecessary panic among the community,” he emphasized.

Authorities also assured parents, guardians, and the wider community that the safety of students remains a top priority. Comprehensive security measures are in place to protect the school environment, and both police and military personnel continue to patrol the vicinity as a precautionary measure against any unforeseen incidents.

Following the clarification, local residents expressed relief, noting how misinformation could quickly incite fear and disrupt the community’s sense of safety. Security agencies reinforced their call for vigilance, urging everyone to report any suspicious activities immediately to the relevant authorities to maintain a secure environment.

The swift response of both the police and military serves as a reminder of the commitment of security forces to protect citizens, prevent panic, and uphold law and order in Nasarawa State.
