Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, fulfilled his civic duty by casting his vote in the ongoing governorship election in Anambra State, demonstrating his continued commitment to the democratic process and encouraging citizens to actively participate in shaping the state’s future.
Obi arrived at Polling Unit 019, Umudim Akasi, Agulu Ward 8, Anaocha Local Government Area, where he was warmly received by residents who were already at the polling station. The former governor engaged with voters, exchanging pleasantries, and urged everyone to exercise patience and respect for the electoral process while casting their votes. His presence at the polling unit attracted considerable attention, reflecting his enduring popularity and influence in the state’s political landscape.
Security operatives were strategically deployed across the area to ensure that the voting process remained peaceful and orderly. Their presence provided reassurance to voters who had arrived early to cast their ballots, emphasizing the seriousness with which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is managing the election and maintaining safety throughout the state.
Obi preaches peace and credibility in the poll
Shortly after casting his vote, Obi addressed journalists, stressing the importance of peace and credibility in the electoral exercise. He called on all citizens to maintain calm and avoid actions that could disrupt the process, highlighting that a free and fair election is the bedrock of democratic governance. According to Obi, the legitimacy of the upcoming administration depends on the transparent conduct of the elections, and he appealed to INEC to enforce rules impartially and ensure that every vote counts.
He further reminded political leaders that their primary responsibility is to serve the people, rather than pursue personal ambitions. Obi emphasized that democracy thrives when the will of the people is respected and when political actors prioritize societal interests over partisan gains. By participating in the voting process, citizens not only choose their leaders but also affirm their role as stakeholders in governance, Obi noted.
