Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his prompt and empathetic response to the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, describing the president’s actions as exemplary leadership in a time of national distress.
According to Kalu, the president has been visibly affected by the incident, including the related violent attack in Ilorin, demonstrating genuine concern for the safety and well-being of the victims and their families. He emphasized that President Tinubu’s decision to cancel all his international trips highlights the seriousness with which he is treating the situation.
“The president is human, and for the last 24 hours since he heard about it, he has been very sad. He has cancelled all his international commitments to Angola, South Africa, and other parts of the world to stay back, mourn the girls, and hold serious in-house meetings with security operatives of Nigeria,” Kalu explained, stressing that these actions are indicative of a leader who prioritizes the welfare of his citizens above personal or political engagements.
Kalu further highlighted that President Tinubu’s swift intervention, including engaging with security agencies, signals responsibility, care, and proactive leadership during crises. He remarked that such decisions demonstrate a fatherly concern for the kidnapped schoolgirls and send a strong message to Nigerians that the government is committed to ensuring their safety.
Originally, the president had intended to visit Kebbi State personally to assess the situation, but after consultations with security advisers, it was deemed safer and more efficient for him to remain in Abuja while delegating Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to oversee on-ground assessments. This strategic decision was made to maintain centralized coordination of national security responses while also ensuring that urgent actions were taken promptly.
Kalu also pointed out that members of the National Assembly share the president’s concern, noting that legislators have expressed collective urgency to ensure the safe return of the abducted schoolgirls. He called on all security agencies to intensify their efforts and leave no stone unturned in resolving the situation quickly and safely.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of national unity and collaboration in times of crisis, commending the president for showing that true leadership requires compassion, accountability, and hands-on engagement during moments of national emergency.
“President Tinubu has demonstrated leadership, showing genuine concern and fatherly care for the children kidnapped in Kebbi. This is exactly how it should be. His proactive steps, including canceling his international engagements and coordinating security measures, reflect the essence of responsible leadership in a democracy,” Kalu stated.
As the incident continues to capture national attention, Kalu urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and supportive, stressing that coordinated efforts by the government, security agencies, and communities are crucial for the safe recovery of the abducted schoolgirls.
