The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has moved to clarify and dismiss circulating reports suggesting an assassination attempt on Naval officer Lt. A.M. Yarima, following his viral confrontation with the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.
In an official statement released by the command, spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh categorically described the claims as “entirely false,” emphasizing that no incident resembling an assassination attempt has been reported, documented, or recorded anywhere within the FCT. The police reiterated that the public should not give credence to such unverified stories, which have the potential to incite unnecessary fear and panic among citizens.
“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima. The command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory,” the statement read.
Despite the rapid spread of these rumours, the FCT Police Command confirmed that ongoing investigations and security checks have so far found no evidence of any plot to endanger Lt. Yarima’s life. Officials stressed the importance of relying only on verified information from official sources, noting that spreading unverified claims could escalate tension unnecessarily.
The speculation originally stemmed from online posts alleging that unidentified gunmen in unmarked vehicles were allegedly tracking Lt. Yarima with the intent to attack him. These claims gained traction quickly, fueling public anxiety and prompting multiple calls for clarification from the authorities. Security operatives, however, maintain that their thorough surveillance and monitoring have revealed no threat, and that Lt. Yarima remains safe.
The controversy has unfolded in the wake of Lt. Yarima’s highly publicised and widely discussed encounter with Minister Wike at a disputed land site in Gaduwa, Abuja. The confrontation, which has been the subject of national debate, appears to have served as the catalyst for the false reports, though authorities have insisted there is no link between the encounter and any purported assassination attempt.
As the situation continues to evolve, FCT police are urging citizens, journalists, and social media users to exercise caution, verify information from official channels, and avoid amplifying sensational claims that lack credible evidence. The command concluded by assuring the public that it remains committed to maintaining security and upholding accurate reporting in all matters concerning residents and public officials within the territory.
