The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has publicly commended Lieutenant A.M. Yarima, the Nigerian Navy officer who recently confronted the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over a disputed property in Abuja. Badaru described Yarima’s actions as “commendable” and emphasized the importance of upholding the law while performing military duties.
The property in question reportedly belongs to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, and the disagreement escalated when Wike attempted to gain access to the site despite instructions from military authorities preventing entry.
Federal Government Assures Protection for Lawful Officers
During a press briefing held at the National Defence College in Abuja on the occasion of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Celebration, Minister Badaru stressed that the Federal Government is committed to protecting officers performing their lawful duties. He noted that Lieutenant Yarima’s adherence to orders and calm demeanor in the face of pressure reflect the professionalism expected of Nigerian military personnel.
He stated, “At the Ministry and across the Armed Forces, we will always protect our officers performing their duties lawfully. Lieutenant Yarima has acted commendably, and we will ensure his safety.” Badaru added that the matter is being thoroughly reviewed, assuring that any officer following legitimate instructions would receive full protection from undue interference or intimidation.
Viral Incident Sparks Nationwide Attention
The confrontation gained national attention after a video of the incident went viral on social media, capturing the heated exchange between Wike and Yarima at the construction site in Gaduwa District, Abuja. In the footage, Wike accused the officer of obstructing his access to the property, claiming that no one, regardless of their position, is above the law. Lieutenant Yarima, meanwhile, maintained that he was executing orders from his superior officers and remained calm throughout the encounter.
The video has since sparked intense public discussion, with many Nigerians praising Yarima for his discipline, courage, and professionalism, while others debated the implications of political influence on military operations. Badaru’s endorsement of the officer underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that military personnel can carry out their duties without fear of retribution or political interference.
The Defence Minister also reiterated that the Armed Forces remain a disciplined institution committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the sovereignty and security of Nigeria, while encouraging the public to respect lawful directives given to military officers in the performance of their duties.
Observers have described Badaru’s comments as a significant show of support for officers on duty, highlighting the importance of maintaining order, respect, and adherence to the chain of command in situations involving high-profile figures.
