A 96-year-old woman in Anambra State has captured nationwide attention after breaking down in tears when she was prevented from casting her vote in the ongoing governorship election. The emotional incident has stirred reactions online as citizens express sympathy and frustration over the situation.

The Anambra governorship election is currently taking place across all 21 local government areas, with thousands of voters turning out to elect the next governor from a lineup of 16 contestants. Despite the massive turnout, the heartbreaking experience of the elderly woman has become one of the most talked-about moments of the day.

‎96-year-old woman stopped from voting

According to a report by PUNCH NG, the woman, identified as Elizabeth Onike, was barred from participating in the election at the Umudim Akasi Polling Unit in Anaocha Local Government Area. Officials informed her that she did not possess a valid voter’s card, making her ineligible to vote under electoral guidelines.

Visibly distressed, Elizabeth Onike expressed her pain and disappointment, saying:

“My children are outside, and none is at home with me. I am pained that I am not going to vote in this election to determine who will be my next governor.”

Her reaction, caught on video, shows her wiping tears as bystanders attempt to console her, highlighting the emotional weight of being excluded from a civic process she eagerly anticipated.

INEC begins uploading election results

In other developments, the Independent National Electoral Commission b has started uploading results from the Anambra governorship election on its online portal. Early figures show Governor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) leading in 17 out of the 21 local government areas.

So far, Soludo has recorded victories in Anambra East, Ayamelum, Oyi, and several other LGAs. However, the final declaration is still pending as INEC continues collation.

The outcome of the election remains highly anticipated, but the incident involving the 96-year-old woman has prompted renewed calls for improved voter support, especially for the elderly.
