Nigerian music superstar, Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’Banj, has finally opened up about the iconic and much-discussed breakup of Mo’Hits Records, giving fans a rare insight into what really happened behind the scenes. According to D’Banj, the split was entirely the decision of his long-time collaborator, Don Jazzy, and not something he instigated himself.
In a candid and reflective interview, the Kokomaster crooner clarified that the breakup was never fueled by conflict, personal disagreements, or rivalry. Instead, it was about vision, timing, and the strategic direction of both their careers. D’Banj emphasized that their separation was a mutual understanding to allow each party to grow individually while preserving the legacy they had built together.

In his own words, D’Banj said: “It didn’t come from me, the idea to go our separate ways didn’t come from me, it came from Don Jazzy 100%. That’s why we’re still cool, and that’s why he gave me 100 percent of my catalog, even 10 other songs I haven’t released. It’s not about the record label for me, it’s about the movement and future.”
He further explained that Don Jazzy ensured a smooth transition by granting him full ownership of his music catalog, which included all released tracks as well as 10 unreleased songs. This gesture, D’Banj noted, reinforced the respect and trust that had always existed between the two artists, and it allowed him to continue building his career without interruption or legal disputes over his music.
Reflecting on their final collaborative project under Mo’Hits, “Oliver Twist,” D’Banj described the track as a massive success that cemented their global recognition. He explained that even though the breakup was inevitable, he was confident that it would help further their individual journeys and sustain the Mo’Hits legacy in Nigerian and African music history.
“For me personally, even though it was a journey and he had his opinions, I knew that we needed to cement that global movement, and I’m glad that, in the end, God still made it happen for us,” he added. His words highlighted the maturity, professionalism, and mutual respect that have defined his long-standing friendship and working relationship with Don Jazzy.
Fans and music industry observers have praised the candidness and composure shown by D’Banj in discussing the split, noting that it reflects the level of maturity both he and Don Jazzy possess. Social media has been abuzz with nostalgia for the Mo’Hits era, with many recalling the numerous hits and breakthrough performances from artists nurtured under the label.
Co-founded by D’Banj and Don Jazzy, Mo’Hits Records played a pivotal role in shaping the Nigerian music landscape, launching the careers of superstars such as Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince. The label became synonymous with innovation, high-quality music production, and international recognition, solidifying both founders’ status as pioneers in the Afrobeats movement.
Despite the split, D’Banj continues to celebrate the achievements of Mo’Hits and the significant impact it had on his career and the music industry at large. He emphasized that while the label no longer exists in its original form, the movement and influence it created continue to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
